Mustard Greens Anyone?

We picked up our 1st Local Produce Marketbasket yesterday and one of the things in our selection was Red Mustard Greens. Hmmm. I'd heard of Mustard Greens but never had them. Tasted a leaf and POW - tasted like Dijon Mustard with a definite kick.

We started looking up info and recipes and discovered these greens are called 'spunky' - I've never heard of any kind of veggie called spunky, but this fits.

We'll definitely be making something with these in the next few days so I will keep you updated.

Other great items too - Bok Choi, Snow Pea Pods (crunchy and delicious!), Magic Thai Basil (I love fresh basil), Red Russian Kale and a Spring Lettuce Blend.

This definitely gives us strong incentive to explore wonderful recipe options with healthy ingredients!

100/Minute + Raisins = Great Walking Tips!

I love that our blog is full of inspirational quotes that people share and also a place where we can share tips or personal experiences. You never know what you'll find each time you check out the blog.

Today I'm going to share a couple of walking tips, courtesy of the RealAge site that I get e-mails from. It's worth it to get on their e-mail list for some interesting tips.

Tip 1 - Minimim 100 Steps a Minute
For maximum health, you want to aim for 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise on most days of the week. But what does "moderate" mean? In a study, researchers found that men needed to take 92–102 steps a minute and women needed about 91–115 steps per minute to elevate their heart rate and oxygen intake high enough to qualify their activity as moderately intense. So grab something with a second hand and count your steps! I did and found I averaged 120 steps a minute on my outside walks. We'll see what pace San and I keep in the mall next!

Tip 2 - A Handful of Raisins
A little raisin appetizer before your workout may work as well as a sports drink in helping you keep pace and could crank up your fat-burning engines to boot. Raisins are loaded with antioxidants and good-for-you nutrients like fiber, iron, and potassium. So keep a stash on hand to help you meet your fruit intake needs when your fruit bowl runs empty.

Now to grab my raisins and head out for my morning walk!

The wonderful thing about the game of life is that winning and losing are only temporary...unless you quit.

—DR. FRED MILLS

Hope everyone had an amazing holiday weekend. The weather could not have been more gorgeous.

I wanted to share the above quote to remind you all that there good days, bad days, hard days, easy days, weight loss, weight gain, and so on but the key to success is never quit. Do not become complacent after days of success and do not become discouraged after days that are less successful. Remember that something is always better than nothing and recommiting every day is the best way to show love for yourself.

Never give up. You are worth it.

Love, Tee

Combat Food Cravings

I found this in the May/June issue of Natural Solutions - seems good to share after a Holiday weekend! A food craving is usually your body telling you it needs more of certain minerals - so here are some options for how to satisfy your craving in a healthy way.

Crave Sweets - Try broccoli, grapes, cheese, protein sources, raisins, cranberries, horseradish
Crave Chocolate - Try raw nuts and seeds, legumes, fruits
Crave Salty Foods - try fish, raw goat milk, unrefined sea salt
Crave Soda - Try Mustard/turnip greens, broccoli, kale, legumes, cheese, sesame

This is an incomplete list, but it does give some options.

And, remember, try water first, your body doesn't know the difference between hunger and thirst!

Today is definitely a day to Recommit!

A Day

Sigh ... So glad I'm heading to Qi Gong tonight. I feel as if this day just happened without my consent. I know we all have those days, best intentions, having goals to accomplish and then distractions and the normal course of life just change plans. My priorities shifted and that's ok too.

So glad I have our Healthy and Fit principles to draw on. I was actually fine with food today, but other aspects of my day just didn't go as planned. It's all ok. I keep looking for what's great about it. I remember that even tho I don't feel like I've made any progress today, I did do some things that are oriented towards my goals. So I know it will work out.

Thanks for the great Pesto recipe San. I hadn't ever thought of having something like this on hand for health benefits. I love the chance to learn something new each day.

It's so nice to have this Blog as well, to reach out, share, and regain my Healthy and Fit perspective.

Coriander Chelation Pesto ~ delicious recipe helps to remove heavy metals

Delicious Recipe helps to remove heavy metals ... Heavy metal poisoning is rampant. It is a major cause of hormonal imbalances, cancer , thyroid problems, neurological disturbances, learning problems, depression, food allergies, parasites etc. etc.

This is a great recipe that is not only easy to make but also really yummy!! It is truly a healing food. One friend suffering from high blood pressure due mercury poisoning had her blood pressure return to normal after eating 2 teaspoons of this pesto daily for only a week.

So whether you are needing to detoxify heavy metals from your body or just wish to use it as a preventative measure, 2 teaspoons a day is all you need to take. This pesto has now become a regular in my diet. Enjoy!!!

Coriander Chelation Pesto

4 cloves garlic
1/3 cup Brazil nuts (selenium)
1/3 cup sunflower seeds (cysteine)
1/3 cup pumpkin seeds (zinc, magnesium)
2 cups packed fresh coriander (cilantro, Chinese parsley) (vitamin A)
2/3 cup flaxseed oil
4 tablespoons lemon juice (vitamin C)
2 tsp dulse powder
Bragg's liquid aminos

Process the coriander and flaxseed oil in a blender until the coriander is chopped. Add the garlic, nuts and seeds, dulse and lemon juice and mix until the mixture is finely blended into a paste. Add a squirt of Bragg's to taste and blend again. Store in dark glass jars if possible. It freezes well, so purchase coriander in season and fill enough jars to last through the year.

Coriander has been proven to chelate toxic metals from our bodies in a relatively short period of time. Combined with the benefits of the other ingredients, this recipe is a powerful tissue cleanser. Two teaspoons of this pesto daily for three weeks is purportedly enough to increase the urinary excretion of mercury, lead and aluminum, thus effectively removing these toxic metals from our bodies. We can consider doing this cleanse for three weeks at least once a year. It is delicious on toast, baked potatoes and pasta.

Yeah!

Yeah ... I began the Seasource seven day internal cleanse today! I am preparing to feel great this summer! Anyone want to join me? Y

It is not easy...To be a soulful person means to go against all the pervasive, prove-yourself values of our culture and instead treasure what is unique and internal and valuable in yourself and your own personal evolution."

—Jean Shinoda Bolen; psychiatrist, author

This is a quote to remind you that you are worth all of the time, effort, energy and love you expend in your quest for abundant health and fitness.

Talk about Empowering!

I just spent a wonderful weekend with six high school girlfriends. We are just crazy when we get together and we certainly raised the level of good brain chemicals with non stop laughter.

I have loved these gals for what seems like my entire life. One of them since we were two years old and all since junior high ... about a half a century!

The reason I am writing about this is to share my heightened awareness about how much control we have over how we age. Even though we are all the same age it was amazing to see the difference in the quality of our health, the ease of movement, the energy levels, the prescription drug consumption and various ailments that can all be addressed through abundant healthy living!

The experience reinforced my gratitude for our program, Arbonne's products and my holistic approach to aging! I have more desire than ever to recommit to my goal and share all we know. Talk about empowering!

Looking forward to our call tonight at 8 PM. ... 616-347-8300 939046#

Schedule

Hi All! This is my third night shift in a row. I don't feel my healthiest on these days. The amount of sleep is less than desired by me and we know how important sleep is. I have to say I do a good job with eating. I do not eat during the night. I get plenty to eat during my day and who needs to be eating 24 hours a day! I wouldn't want my body to think eating during the night is ok! I do like the job and I figure there is a reason I've been put on this shift. I will do my best and hopefully I will get to work different hours one day.
Looking forward to sleeping in my bed tomorrow night and more importantly our call before I get to do that!!
See You All Then!

Chinese Wisdom - Tending the Rice Pot

I have a book called "Dancing with the Ten Thousand Things" written by Tom Balles, who is a practicing acupuncturist and lecturer at the Tai Sophia Institute for the Healing Arts in Maryland (one of my favorite places.) This information comes from his book.

The Chinese character for chi has been loosely translated as breath, life force, vitality, and energy. The ideogram/character depicts the vapors or steam rising from cooking rice, moving the lid of the pot up and down. The character portrays movement as synonymous with life, transformation and change as ongoing realities.

To keep the lid of the rice pot moving smoothly up and down takes tending. Fuel must be supplied, water when needed, and heat adjusted when needed. Not enough heat, nothing happens, things stagnate. Too much heat and you might blow the top off!

In life, this is reflected in tending to many rice pots, our families, friendships, communities, jobs, and ourselves. It is about balance to allow the different aspects of your life and your health to flourish. It's about paying attention and doing the little things, making the little changes consistently over time, to create the results you desire.

Take time today to think about how to tend to your rice pot (or rice pots). Ask yourself, what is needed here? What will allow your life (your health) to flourish here? How can you create healthy movement?

~~~~~~~~~~
I love how what we talk about in AHL reflects this ancient wisdom.
Good Morning!
Beautiful blue sky this morning! Thanks for the sneaker advice Gerri, I am going to do that. I have had the same sneakers for a couple of years and over the weekend they gave me blisters! What's up with that? Just wanted to check in and say Hi to you beautiful women and to let you know I Am Okay! You Are Okay! Look for a quote from me tomorrow. Until then think well and live well today because today's the day!
Today There Are Likelihoods
Courtesy of the Universe through Mike Dooley...
Today there are "likelihoods," no concretes, no absolutes, nothing predestined or set in stone, just "likelihoods."
And the ones that will come to pass will all pivot on you and your thoughts.
You're that powerful.
My wish for each of you is that you stay on the Bright Train today; that you see the possibilities and the opportunities; that you respond rather than react, and that you are gentle with yourself in your thoughts too.
And don't forget to have some fun today - laugh!
New Walking Shoes
If you do a lot of walking, or running, I highly recommend going to a specialty running store to get your feet and walking/running style analyzed. They check your pressure points and arch and actually video tape your feet on a treadmill to mimic your normal pace for walking or running - whatever the shoes are for. All this data helps determine what type of shoe and insole will work best for you.
For one, I never realized that my shoes should be a little larger, allowing for more toe space. And mine feel good on DAY ONE - no breaking in period!
It's a fascinating experience. And if you're committed to this type of healthy and fit activity, you deserve to be well-soled.
Watch out San - new shoes!
Even the Small Things Matter
“Put your heart, mind, intellect and soul even to your smallest acts. This is the secret of success.”
—Swami Sivananda (1887-1963) spiritual leader, author, physician
This quote reminds me that if I play full out in everything I do - including living an abundant healthy fit lifestyle - than I cannot be anything but successful. So get in with all that you have and all that you are everyday. I am recommitting to doing just that.
Love to all,
Tee
Yay Suzanne!!
Two days and counting!! Love you. Tee
I am getting the same message over and over today!
"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the things you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor and catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore - dream and discover ! " Mark Twain
Love this ...
Go For It! If you've had a project on the backburner that you really want to do, now is the time to do it. Don't allow yourself or others to talk you out of moving forward. Remember those who don't try rarely get what they want. It may take a little bravado, a little more energy, but the rewards for embarking on this new project will more than justify your efforts.
Abundant Healthy Living Call Tonight!
It's Monday again and for me, a time to recommit. The weekend brought some frustration and temptations however, I am up early and back to my goal both mentally and physically!
This will be a busy week for me so I am spending some time this morning to get organized. Sticking to my healthy fit goals is so much easier when I am prepared.
I hope to that you can join us on our call tonight. Dial in at 7:55 so we can start at 8.
Friday Night Snack Control
A timely thought to 'chew' on. :-D
"Having trouble choosing between Blazing Saddles and Love Story on movie night? If you're trying to lose weight, go for the funny cowboy flick instead of the tearjerker.
Why? Because you'll probably snack less. When a group of people in a study watched a sad movie, they ate close to 30 percent more buttered popcorn than when they watched a happy film. "
Hmmm...maybe there's more to this laughter thing than most people realize!
And don't forget to be aware whether what you're eating is poison or fuel either!
Found this tip on http://www.realage.com/. Great site for small 'bites' of healthy and fit wisdom.
Start Where You Are
I had the wonderful opportunity to meet and develop a friendship with Chris Gardner last year when he delivered the keynote address for our company. Chris wrote the book The Pursuit of Happyness - which was made into a movie starring Will Smith. He is truly an inspired and inspiring man.
Chris has a new book coming out May 12th. The book is called Start Where You Are. Aligned right with the principles of AHF. Here is a brief descriptin of the book -
Ever since the story of his transformation from homeless, single and struggling father to millionaire became known the world over, Chris Gardner - whose life story both inspired the movie "The Pursuit of Happyness" and became a number 1 "New York Times" Bestseller by the same name - has been inundated with two questions: 'How Did You Do It' and 'How Can I Do it Too?' Gardner's power-packed, transformational reply is the basis of this long-anticipated book. As a departure from standard self-help tomes that promise overnight riches and exclusive secrets for success, Gardner avoids any tilt toward magical thinking by staying with real issues and solutions impacting individuals in all walks of life. Taking stock of his own credos, including 'The Cavalry Ain't Coming', 'Find Your Button', and 'Seek the Furthest Star' - Gardner's 44 life lessons are earthy, soulful, and always accessible. With an array of stories from the author's own life, as well as from those he has known or admired, both famous and not.
Another book to add to the Summer reading list for sure.
When I earn my Mercedes, I am inviting Chris to speak!!
Love you all,
Tee
Something to think about
Here is a quote I saw recently from Anne Frank -
" How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world."
You can read Anne's quote in the traditional world sense or you could read it in the smaller world sense - the world within you. One of the AHF principles is get started, do something, something is better than nothing and this quote soeaks to that. What are you waiting for? Did you have a slip up this morning - stop waiting - recommit.
The world in both the senses is yours. Improve it - now in this moment.
Love to all!
Tee
SNACKS that are FUEL!
Here's a list of foods the AHL crew uses to craze on. Lots of these foods are high in calories so you need to eat just enough to satisfy the need to chew or get the taste. I find the more I take my vitamins the less cravings I have between meals and I love Gerri's comment about being thirsty. Tee's chewing gum is interesting too. I used to eat so much while I prepared a meal and found if I chewed Dentene I couldn't pop food in my mouth! Please suggest your favorites to add to our list!
Almonds, Walnuts
Apples with natural peanut butter/almond butter
Arbonne Chews
Baby Bell cheeses
Baby carrots
Cup of Detox Tea or splurge on Chai
Dried Fruits
Hummus with carrots
Fig 8 Protein Bars I cut them into 1" cubes
Fizzy Tabs - sometimes it's really that I'm thirsty when I think I'm hungry
Frozen grapes - yummy in the summer
Fresh fruit
Greek Yogurt with Honey
Hard Boiled Egg
Protein, Lunch Meat, Chicken, Fish - I try to cook extra so there will be something in the fridge ready to eat
Peppermint sugar free gum
Prepared Veggies ... celery, peppers, mushrooms, carrots, cherry tomatoes
Rice cakes
Seeds such as Pepitas - roasted and shelled pumpkin seeds
Yogurt/small cups of yogurt - sprinkle w/granola if you need something crunchy
Some Great Books
As you are thinking about your Summer reading list, think about adding the "You" series of books by Dr. Mehmet Oz. The books are wonderful and they really deliver information about health, wellness, disease, prevention, etc. in a manner that is easily digestible (pardon the pun). The advice is wise and is complimentary to what we are learning together.
Also, I would encourage all of you walkers out there to look in your community for 5K events. A 5K is 3.1 miles. Most of these events welcome walkers or have an alternate walking option. They are great motivators if you are the type of person who like to be working toward a goal. Plus, often times the money raised supports important efforts in our communities. Finally, the Run/Walk communities are some of the nicest most encouraging people you will meet. They are very big believers is "start where you are" and "anything is better than nothing."
Love to all,
Tee
Incredible!
That's how I feel about all of us on this Abundant Healthy Living journey! It has been my pleasure to work with San, Gerri, Suzanne and T and all of you who have been on the calls. I love the 'light bulb' moments! I have to say, my metablism has shifted a bit, time for me to step up the exercise regime. I have learned so much and look forward to learning more! There is always something on the horizon for us to incorporate into this process.
Love You All!
