Creative Site for Squeezing in Exercise

Hi everyone,

I just looked at the Health section in today's Washington Post and there's an article about a free website that 2 friends put together called www.squeezeitin.com.

One woman has a background as a certified fitness instructor and the other had TV production experience, so this makes for a great blending of talents for this site.

The website's goal is to show us how we can 'squeeze in' exercise in our already over-packed, busy lives. Many of their suggestions may be something you already do, some may just seem just plain silly, but you may find a few new ways to just kick things up a notch!

I've just started to look at it, so I don't have any strong opinion yet. Would love to hear what anyone else thinks and if it inspires them at all!

Enjoy an Abundantly Healthy and Happy Tuesday!

Keep Going By Ralph Marston

Thanks for a wonderful 6 weeks- I'm looking forward to the next 6 weeks with you.
Betty Robinson:

Keep Going

On the other side of the challenge there is a great reward. Keep going.

When you've made the effort and cannot yet see the result, keep going. The very next step could be the one that brings you across the finish line.
When you become weary, remind yourself why you started in the first place.
Connect with your true purpose, and feel the energy begin to flow through you again.

Smile and laugh and have a good time on the journey. Be kind and considerate, thoughtful and helpful, and your load will feel lighter, your steps will come more quickly.

As long as you keep going, every inch of progress will make you stronger.
Every moment will bring you closer to the goal.

Consider what a joy and a privilege it is to be able to make a difference.
Feel that joy, keep going, and make your world brighter with each step you take.

So Very Grateful!

Hi Team and fellow Abundant Healthy Living Enthusiasts!

Wasn't Saturday fun! And didn't we learn a-LOT?!

Feeling great and grateful for the things I have learned during the last six weeks. Truthfully? It's been an incredibly stressful time in our family and much is happening behind the scenes. Many a night I've been awake wondering - and how does THIS fit into more sleep is better than less? Go to bed earlier so you won't eat all that in front of the TV stuff? Hmmmm... In actuality, what the session has provided for me overall is the knowledge that at any time, any day, and in any way, I can recommit. That means not beating yourself up for what you have not done - rather, it means acknowledging yourself for the things you HAVE done. The sessions have been sooooo meaningful and informative.

I cannot thank the original AHL team for the things you have taught and continue to teach me. My heart is filled with gratitude.

Blessings!

Morning Walk with Dr. Jim Duke, Author of The Green Pharmacy

What a special and lovely morning on Saturday, July 25th . I had no idea of what I was in for. Many thanks to Prue Ronneberg for hosting and organizing this event. Dr. Duke's garden and grounds were awesome. The Abundant Healthy Living group was taken on a fascinating and beautiful tour where we learned many new things about the healing benefits of a wide variety herbs in a beautiful wooded nature setting on Dr. Duke's breathtaking grounds. Dr. Duke shared his incredible knowledge and answered our questions with humor and detail. I took many notes, too many to repeat here. Dr. Duke's Green Pharmacy book is an herbal encyclopedia and should definitely be used for reference. So glad I got my copy. During the walk, Dr. Duke spoke of herbs for menopause, post menopause -- like Primrose & Don Quoi, cinnamon for diabetes prevention, lemon balm for shingles, St. John's Wort for panic attacks, walnut oil for depression, ginseng for vitality & youthfulness. It was great to smell the aromas of various herbs. If requested via e-mail. Dr. Duke said that he would send the recipie for that curried celery soup with lots of Old Bay seasoning he mentioned (celery seed prevents gout amongst other benefits, Old Bay seasoning has numerous health benefits) I remember he also spoke highly of the health benefits of rosemary tea. Dr. Duke's website is www.greenpharmacy.com There are so many herbal remedies & benefits that it is mind boggling. Just read and keep your Green Pharmacy book handy. At the end of the tour Dr. Duke even serenaded us with folk songs he wrote about herbs. It was truly an honor and a joy to be in this man's presence. Saturday was a great opportunity to also meet the wonderful people behind the voices of our Monday night conference call. The brunch at Prue's house was delicious and delightful after Dr. Duke's herbal tour and information sharing session. I left Saturday's event feeling enlightened, inspired and invigorated. I feel so blessed and fortunate to be part of the Abundant Healthy Living group. Thanks to everyone for making my day! -

Just thinking

Hi everyone - my first blog entry - HOW EXCITING! I just wanted to say that I am sitting in my office drinking my Daily Detox Tea and eating a salad. I am listening to Martina McBride on my ipod and thinking of all of you. Thank you for all your support. Just to let you know - I have lost close to 10 pounds. I know it might not show to anyone else but my clothes feel better and I am walking 4 flights of steps a couple times a day because I am not as winded. I have also begun using the Flat Belly Diet ideas to get my stomach back to normal (after abdominal surgery I am having a lot of swelling and the fat is redistributing to that area - ugh). I am exercising and doing the 5 more minutes motivation. It works!

I thank you all for being so inspirational. Everyone needs such a great network.

Have a great day.

My new summer splurge

Hi all, It's been a while since I have checked in. I am just being 'summer' busy. Working to offer the special waived sign up deal to lots of people and adding in gardening which not only burns calories but feeds my soul.

As for Abundant Healthy Living, I am happy to report that I have been making many small but good choices and they are adding up.

Today, after a wonderful walk with Gerri ... I was actually shocked when she turned for the exit as I could have done a few more laps ... I told her I wanted to go get a coffee drink.
I had had it on my mind to celebrate with a bit of a splurge. But while at the gas station watching people come out with their big gulps, then at the bank the car next to me had frappacincos I decided what I really wanted was something healthy.

So I came home and made a small pot of decaf raspberry chocolate coffee and used it as the base for my protein shake!! I added some fiber, stevia and lots of ice and it is DELISH!!

Wishing you all an abundant and healthy day! Love, San

Summertime Recipes - Part II

Made Banana Soft Serve last night. I peeled 3 bananas and broke into smaller pieces before freezing - figured they would blend easier. It is VERY NOISY to begin with. I think they do need to start softening some. And I added a small amount of milk too. Might think of adding a bit of orange juice or other liquid. It doesn't need much. And it did whip into soft serve nicely. I had mine with cinnamon sprinkled on top. Mark tried his with chocolate. Who knew bananas could be so good this way!

Today we made the Healthy Melon Slushie - VERY Easy! Mild flavor, even with some OJ and lime added. Could definitely add some other fruit to this as well.

Both nice treats and a great fruit serving too!

Summertime Recipes

Maryland is getting that hazy, hot and humid feeling that is such a familiar part of summer here. So how about some healthy refreshing recipes! I haven't tried these yet, but they sound perfect for days like we're having now!

Healthy Melon Slushie

5 ice cubes, slightly crushed
4 cups of cubed ripe cantaloupe
1/4 cup of fresh orange juice
add the juice of one lime, just for kicks

Blend together and pour into glasses.

Banana Soft Serve

Take 2-3 frozen bananas and toss them into a food processor. Let it process for about five minutes, stopping every so often to scrape down the sides. As each minute passes, the bananas will get light, fluffy and take on a creamy texture--sort of like soft serve!

Optional: sprinkling a bit of cinnamon on top or dust with cocoa powder

Spicy Watermelon

Watermelon is a good source of lycopene, which is an important antioxidant that may help reduce your risk for heart disease and certain cancers. Adding a little dash of red pepper/cayenne pepper to your melon could also help boost your metabolism.

Who is brave enough to try this! I'm so curious!

Make it a great weekend everybody!

Here's to Healthy Grazing!

This is a list in progress. Each round of our AHL calls results in a few more additions to the list. Take a look and use what appeals to you!

Some of these foods are high in calories so you need to eat just enough to satisfy the need to chew or get the taste. Also, several of us find the more we take vitamins (Arbonne Hybrids) the less cravings we have between meals. And don't forget to drink water first - you might just be thirsty. Here are some other food suggestions for fueling your body:
  • Almonds, Walnuts
  • Apples with natural peanut butter/almond butter
  • Arbonne Chews
  • Baby Bell cheeses
  • Baby carrots
  • Cup of Detox Tea or splurge on Chai
  • Dried Fruits
  • Hummus with carrots
  • Parmesan Zucchini Crisps - recipe to be posted separately
  • Protein Bars using Fig8 Chocolate Protein Mix - recipe to be posted separately
  • Fizzy Tab Popsicles – great for summer. Just buy the popsicle trays available at any home store. Blend with fruit!
  • Water or Water with Fizzy Tabs remember sometimes you're actually thirsty not hungry
  • Frozen grapes - yummy in the summer
  • Fresh fruit
  • Greek Yogurt with Honey
  • Hard Boiled Egg
  • Protein, Lunch Meat, Chicken, Fish - cook extra so there will be something in the fridge ready to eat
  • Peppermint sugar free gum - If you chew gum while preparing meals you won't be able to pop food in your mouth!
  • Prepared Veggies ... celery, peppers, mushrooms, carrots, cherry tomatoes
  • Rice cakes
  • Seeds such as Pepitas - roasted and shelled pumpkin seeds
  • Yogurt/small cups of yogurt - sprinkle w/granola if you need something crunchy

Any more suggestions?! We'd love to hear from you!

Check Up

Hey friends -

We made it through the halfway point of our latest session. Time to do a check up. Where are you in your goals? What do you need to do to continue your progress? How can you apply the principles we are working on to other areas of your life that will compliment you health and fitness work?

For me, I have not met my goal of losing 10 pounds in this session - at least not yet. I have not been able to train as much as I would have liked due to an injury. And I feel like I have been making a lot of exceptions - too much poison and not enough fuel. I have not gained any weight but I am certainly not losing.

I am cleared to start training again - I have 5 miles to do after work. And I am recommitting to less exceptions. I have modified my goal to lose 5 pounds during the last three weeks of this session. Then I'll work on getting the other five off in the next session.

See you all tonight on the call. I am especially excited about tonight's call since my husband has decided to join the AHF team.

Love to all,
Tee

Go for the Cantaloupe!

A great tip from RealAge.com:

Curb the Munchies with This Water-Filled Food

There’s a way to avoid plowing through the whole table of chips and dips at the barbecue this weekend. Choose water-filled fruit for your first nibbles -- like slices of juicy ripe cantaloupe. According to Jonny Bowden, PhD, author of The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth, eating foods with high water content tends to be even more filling than chugging water with your meal.

An Orange Oasis
Cantaloupe flesh is 90 percent water -- which means it’s a wonderful paradox for the calorie conscious. It makes you feel really full when it’s in your stomach, but it’s really low in calories: An entire large cantaloupe has only 277 calories. What’s in that other 10 percent, you ask? Loads of good stuff, like blood-pressure-friendly potassium (427 milligrams per cup of cubed cantaloupe) and cancer-fighting beta carotene (3,000 micrograms).

Melon Makeovers
Fresh cantaloupe at the peak of ripeness is pretty hard to beat and doesn’t necessarily need much accompaniment. But if you’re feeling creative, try some of these summer-inspired recipes from EatingWell:
Turn your melon into an Italian-style lunch salad: Melon Panzanella.
Use it to start a light, refreshing summer meal: Chilled Melon Soup.
Freeze it into a treat that’ll help you ignore the ice cream truck: Cantaloupe Ice Pops.

Power-Packed Pesto Recipe

Just got this from an e-mail I received from Tai Sophia:

Enjoy Summer's Green Bounty with this Power-Packed Pesto Recipe
from herbalist, nutritionist, and Tai Sophia faculty member Bevin Clare, M.S.

Looking for a way to enjoy summer’s fantastic bounty of fresh herbs and greens? Fresh herb pesto is easy and quick to make, keeps well in the fridge or freezer, and is lovely on bread, pasta, steamed veggies, grilled meats, and in soups and salads. A power-packed “super food,” pesto delivers the antioxidant properties of greens, the medicinal value of garlic, and healthful fats from olive oil and nuts. Try this recipe:

1 c. fresh greens (basil, nettles, arugula, spinach, watercress or other mild greens)
½ c. flavoring herbs (fresh basil, mint, oregano, thyme, rosemary, dill, fennel)
2-10 cloves fresh raw garlic, crushed
¼ c. pine nuts or walnuts
½ c. olive oil (or more to taste)
Add salt to taste

Chop fresh greens in food processor. Blend in flavoring herbs, then garlic and nuts. Transfer to bowl and fold in oil and salt. Store in fridge for 2 weeks or freeze.

You can add cheese to taste, but don’t freeze pesto with cheese.
------------------
Mark made zucchini pancakes last month and added pesto to them - YUMMY!!! Definitely on the DO AGAIN list!

Don't let yourself get too hungry

...Like I did today...I'm usually pretty good about eating small amounts of mostly healthy fuel throughout the day. But, once in a while, I'm unprepared. Today was one of those days. I started out well with my hybrids and a shake. Then I was on the go. By the time I got home after 1 pm, I was very hungry and then went for the carbs. Not very satisfying in the end.

It happens to all of us, I'm sure! And it's a great reminder to me to be mindful about poison vs fuel and to be sure to have a backup plan. In the future, I will make it a point to pack some extra chews and maybe a protein bar. Nuts, or a healthy trail mix can also tide me over. And, of course, this is a great time to let go of any guilt and RECOMMIT!

I'd love to hear what any of you do that travels well without refrigeration!

May you all find the GirlScout in you and always be prepared!

Secrets from the Blue Zones

I would like to first say thanks for another wonderful session on Monday night. As a new member, I cannot tell you all how much your information, insights and advice have helped me. I wanted to share the name and author of the book I mentioned on the call last night. The name of the book is The Blue Zones (Lessons for Living Longer from the People who've lived the Longest), by
Dan Buettner. A fascinating, must read for anyone who embraces abundant healthy living.
Betty Robinson

Raw Food

I have been intrigued by the raw food movement over the past couple of years. Today in the Post Express Fit section there was a story on eating raw.

Tania Mercer is a DC based certified living foods chef who runs a health counseling service (nourishingyou.com) and she maintains that raw foods allow us to eat the way nature intended. She maintains that by eating this way you will feel differently, you'll have increased energy, and you'll lose more weight. Mercer explains that when you leave your food untouched you preserve the digestive enzymes that occur in the food which aids digestion. As a bonus a raw food diet contributes to a glowing complexion.

The article mentions that eating raw does not have to be difficult or blah. Sushi and Smoothies are raw food staples. Tania Mercer says that the average person does not need to follow a strictly raw diet to gain the benefits. Try going 50 percent raw - two salads per day and two servings of fruit at breakfast and you will be doing really well.

If you are not into eating raw meat (e-coli dangers) try nuts, seeds, buckwheat, wild rice, and quinoa (yum!) which serve as raw protein sources. Those who do eat raw meat stick to sushi or carpaccio.

The following link provides more complete infomation on the Raw Foods movement - http://altmedicine.about.com/od/popularhealthdiets/a/Raw_Food.htm

I am not an advocate of fad dieting - but incorporating raw food into our fuel options supports the healthy fit principles that we have been discussing - Fuel vs. Posion, Anything is Better than Nothing, and Grazing.

This may or may not be for you - but I think part of living an abundant healthy and fit life is to educate yourself about nutrition.

Have a salad and some fresh fruit today!

Love,
Tee

What's Great About This?

" I never fail at anything. I successfully find ways that don't work." - Thomas A. Edison

I saw this quote and thought of our principle of asking "What's Great About This?" Thomas Edison could find success in failure - now that's a pretty powerful use of this principle!

I know it's not always easy to ask this question and come up with an answer. Especially after a hard fall "off the wagon." Yet, each stumble teaches us something.

I know that this weekend with my family I did not do as well with my eating as I would have liked. And I did have a cookie every night that the hotel put out - it was so welcoming! Yet I also know that even though I ate more poison, it was still NOT as much as I would have in the past. I know that most of the food that we had over my mom's house for our cookout was a l0t healthier than it would have been in years past. And when it came to dessert, only a small slice, no seconds.

So what's great about my weekend is that I overindulged LESS. Mark and I took the stairs to our hotel room every day since it was on the 2nd floor - that was a no brainer. I had a wonderful walk on Sunday morning down by the riverfront and around a beautiful lake. We fit in a long walk on Sunday night and crossed the new pedestrian bridge that spans the Missouri. And we made other small, healthier shifts in our choices that I know are a result of Abundant Healthy Living.

I still have to get on the scale. Will do that tomorrow. I usually give myself 1 full day in focused healthy mode before I 'weigh in' after my trips!

No Exceptions!

Love - Gerri

Fuel That Nurtures ... Eating Right to Feel Better

At its simplest, food is fuel. Though our preferences regarding taste and texture can vary widely, we all rely on the foods we eat for energy. Most people are aware that it is vital we consume a diverse assortment of foods if we aspire to maintain a state of physical well-being. However, the intimate connection between diet and our mental well-being is less understood. Just as the nutritional components in food power the body, so too do they power the mind. Some foods can impair cognitive functioning and sap our energy while others heighten our intellectual prowess and make us feel vigorous. What we eat and drink can have a powerful effect on our ability to focus, mental clarity, mood, and stress levels. Food allergies, which don’t always manifest themselves in forms we recognize, can also play a significant role in the maintenance of mental health. Thus, for most of us, even a simple change in diet can have a profoundly positive impact on our lives. Taking the time to explore whether anxiety, muddled thoughts, or inexplicable tension can be linked to a food allergy or food sensitivity can empower you to treat your symptoms naturally. The benefits of a healthier, more personalized diet are often felt immediately. Sugar, saturated fats, wheat, and dairy products are frequently allergens and can stress the body. For people that are allergic, consuming them can cause imbalances in the physical self that have a negative effect on the body’s ability to nourish the brain. Water, fiber, nuts, unprocessed seeds, raw fruits and vegetables, and vegetable proteins, on the other hand, support physical and mental functioning by providing those nutrients we do need without additional subs! tances we don’t. A balanced, natural diet can ease mood swings, panic attacks, anxiety, and mild depression. Intellectual clarity and agility is improved when the mind receives proper nourishment. Even those individuals who are blessed with the ability to consume almost any food can benefit from a healthier and simpler diet. Since the mental and physical selves are closely bound to one another, we must feed each the foods upon which they thrive.

Choose Wisely

"Life is change. Growth is optional. Choose wisely." -- Karen Kaiser Clark

Fuel or Poison? Rest or exercise? Read something to escape or read something to enlighten? Stay in bed 5 minutes longer or get up and go out for that walk or run before work? Get mad at the driver that cut you off or say a little prayer that there is nothing really wrong in their life that is making them reckless.

Sometimes the choices are small, sometimes they are larger. Each one matters. We can choose to see the glass half empty, half full or overflowing. We can also "be the cup" and be the inspiration and role model for others. Be your word. Be true to who YOU are because YOU are OK and beautiful and empowered.

Make today a day of GREAT choices in all you do!
