Anyone have any tips about how to "handle" chronic cankersores? I read this in the paper this morning, but would appreciate knowing sources through diet, not supplements, of the necessary nutritional components.
: If I feel a canker sore coming on, I put a wad of chopped sauerkraut on the area, hold it there for a minute, then chew and swallow. I do this three or four times a day for two to three days.
A: Trauma to the mouth from sharp food can trigger a canker sore (aphthous ulcer). So can immune suppression or a deficiency of folic acid, vitamin B-12 and iron. A 1930s remedy recommended swishing sauerkraut juice in the mouth several times a day. Perhaps the bacteria that ferment cabbage into sauerkraut provide helpful nutrients.
A 2009 study demonstrated improvement in canker sores from 1,000 micrograms of vitamin B-12 daily (Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine).
I know there's no way you can encourage a kid to swish saurkraut juice in their mouths. Alternatives?
Grateful to you

Prue, since vitamin deficiency is thought to be one causes and supplements are out of the question, perhaps a daily Arbonne 'ready to drink' shake would be good. Delicious and full of vitamins. Love you, San

To relieve pain and speed healing:
Rinse your mouth. Use salt water; baking soda (dissolve 1 teaspoon of soda in 1/2 cup warm water); hydrogen peroxide diluted by half with water; or a mixture of 1 part diphenhydramine (Benadryl) to either 1 part bismuth subsalicylate (Kaopectate) or 1 part simethicone (Maalox). Be sure to spit out the mixtures after rinsing.
Cover lesions with a paste made of baking soda.
Try over-the-counter products that contain a numbing agent, such as Anbesol and Orajel.
Avoid abrasive, acidic or spicy foods that can cause further irritation and pain.
Apply ice to your canker sores or allow ice chips to slowly dissolve over the sores.
Brush your teeth gently, using a soft brush and toothpaste without foaming agents, such as TheraBreath.
Dab a small amount of milk of magnesia on your canker sore a few times a day. This can ease the pain and may help the sore heal more quickly
My family's remedy for canker sores once they show up - powdered alum, apply with your fingertip. Helps dry it out. Not sure how a kid would handle this. It does feel (and taste) a little weird. And you do apply it a 2-3 times a day but the canker sore usually clears up in a day or two. Very effective.
ReplyDeleteWhenever I've had cancer soars I always rinse my mouth as often as possible throughout the day with a tsp of salt disolved in 3/4 of warm water. I use the entire amount each time and rinse at least 4 times a day.
