What's Great About This?

" I never fail at anything. I successfully find ways that don't work." - Thomas A. Edison

I saw this quote and thought of our principle of asking "What's Great About This?" Thomas Edison could find success in failure - now that's a pretty powerful use of this principle!

I know it's not always easy to ask this question and come up with an answer. Especially after a hard fall "off the wagon." Yet, each stumble teaches us something.

I know that this weekend with my family I did not do as well with my eating as I would have liked. And I did have a cookie every night that the hotel put out - it was so welcoming! Yet I also know that even though I ate more poison, it was still NOT as much as I would have in the past. I know that most of the food that we had over my mom's house for our cookout was a l0t healthier than it would have been in years past. And when it came to dessert, only a small slice, no seconds.

So what's great about my weekend is that I overindulged LESS. Mark and I took the stairs to our hotel room every day since it was on the 2nd floor - that was a no brainer. I had a wonderful walk on Sunday morning down by the riverfront and around a beautiful lake. We fit in a long walk on Sunday night and crossed the new pedestrian bridge that spans the Missouri. And we made other small, healthier shifts in our choices that I know are a result of Abundant Healthy Living.

I still have to get on the scale. Will do that tomorrow. I usually give myself 1 full day in focused healthy mode before I 'weigh in' after my trips!

No Exceptions!

Celebrate Your Independence!

Celebrate your Independence to live a happy AND healthy life. Celebrate your Independence to CHOOSE things that fuel your body and soul. Enjoy the new you!

I am off this morning to enjoy this long weekend with my family in Omaha, Nebraska. It's been a while since I have visited and even longer for Mark. I know I used to resign myself to gaining weight whenever going on a trip. No more. I feel empowered to continue to embrace and live our Abundant Healthy Living principles - they serve us even more when we are not in a normal day to day situation. I know I can enjoy this weekend and still come back home and not gain weight. Who knows - I might even lose a little!

I just know it's going to be fun for me to go home about 2 pounds lighter than when they saw me last. Woo Hoo!!!

Make this a Healthy and Happy Fourth of July Weekend!

Love you all! - Gerri

Fuel That Nurtures ... Eating Right to Feel Better

At its simplest, food is fuel. Though our preferences regarding taste and texture can vary widely, we all rely on the foods we eat for energy. Most people are aware that it is vital we consume a diverse assortment of foods if we aspire to maintain a state of physical well-being. However, the intimate connection between diet and our mental well-being is less understood. Just as the nutritional components in food power the body, so too do they power the mind. Some foods can impair cognitive functioning and sap our energy while others heighten our intellectual prowess and make us feel vigorous. What we eat and drink can have a powerful effect on our ability to focus, mental clarity, mood, and stress levels. Food allergies, which don’t always manifest themselves in forms we recognize, can also play a significant role in the maintenance of mental health. Thus, for most of us, even a simple change in diet can have a profoundly positive impact on our lives. Taking the time to explore whether anxiety, muddled thoughts, or inexplicable tension can be linked to a food allergy or food sensitivity can empower you to treat your symptoms naturally. The benefits of a healthier, more personalized diet are often felt immediately. Sugar, saturated fats, wheat, and dairy products are frequently allergens and can stress the body. For people that are allergic, consuming them can cause imbalances in the physical self that have a negative effect on the body’s ability to nourish the brain. Water, fiber, nuts, unprocessed seeds, raw fruits and vegetables, and vegetable proteins, on the other hand, support physical and mental functioning by providing those nutrients we do need without additional subs! tances we don’t. A balanced, natural diet can ease mood swings, panic attacks, anxiety, and mild depression. Intellectual clarity and agility is improved when the mind receives proper nourishment. Even those individuals who are blessed with the ability to consume almost any food can benefit from a healthier and simpler diet. Since the mental and physical selves are closely bound to one another, we must feed each the foods upon which they thrive.

Choose Wisely

"Life is change. Growth is optional. Choose wisely." -- Karen Kaiser Clark

Fuel or Poison? Rest or exercise? Read something to escape or read something to enlighten? Stay in bed 5 minutes longer or get up and go out for that walk or run before work? Get mad at the driver that cut you off or say a little prayer that there is nothing really wrong in their life that is making them reckless.

Sometimes the choices are small, sometimes they are larger. Each one matters. We can choose to see the glass half empty, half full or overflowing. We can also "be the cup" and be the inspiration and role model for others. Be your word. Be true to who YOU are because YOU are OK and beautiful and empowered.

Make today a day of GREAT choices in all you do!
